Miley Cyrus Presents Her New Rockstar Epoch in Seventh Studio Album Plastic Hearts
Miley Cyrus has shown throughout her music career that she is not interested in being shelved under one specific musical category. From her second studio album, Breakout, which still had consistent Disney undertones, Miley was still not fully comfortable in experimenting her sound. She released another underperforming “dance-pop” album, Can't Be Tamed (2011) and later decided to focus more on her acting career after feeling uninspired by her musical work.
Even so, she returned to her musicality and broke away from the Disney influence by promoting her fourth studio album as her actual Debut. Bangerz(2013), introduced the world to a brand-new, grown and sexy Miley, and is her best performing album having sold over 1 million copies.
After her successful, yet controversial run with Bangerz, she went on to release two more Albums; Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Pets(2015) and Younger Now (2013). Now, as an established matured artist with the capability to guide her own sound and image, Miley has shifted way beyond the elements of her previous projects, and instead bestows a legendary Pop-Rock sultress' project, on new album Plastic Hearts.
Miley performed a cover to one of Blondie’s Hit Singles, “Heart of Glass”, at the iHeartRadio Festival, which led the public into a frenzy over “Rock Star Miley”. This performance, along with live performances of “Midnight Sky Remix” and “Zombie”, went on to be the three leading singles to her seventh studio album.
Plastic Hearts easily merges the idolized Punk Rock aesthetic with the contemporary audios of Pop. To stiffen Miley’s innovative epoch, the project includes meaningful guest features from legendary Punk-Rock artists; Billy Idol, Joan Jett & Stevie Nicks. Dua Lipa embellished her feature on song “Prisoner”, which is a display of Miley’s comfortability with the Pop sound , and lively experimentation with Rock music.
She sonically submits to her Remix of Stevie Nicks “Edge of Midnight”- on “Midnight Sky”. Aside from reverbeing the sound, but still keeping intact the familiarity, Miley touches on her past vulnerability and dreams of living a more sensual life. This uptempo theme follows throughout the project and is seen on songs like; “WTF Do I Do Know”, “Gimme What I Want” and “Prisoner”.
The singer however, unveils a more downcast sound on tracks like; Angels Like You, Hate Me and Never Be Me. As if she is ceasing to resist her innate misguidedness , each chorus unravels a new layer of Miley’s fragility. This display of sadness is seen in lyrics like:
“And it’s not your fault that i can’t be what you need, Baby Angels like you can’t fly down her with me” - “Angels Like you”
and,
“I don’t need a future, I Don’t need a past, I just need a lover”- “Gimme What I Want.”
As she continues to develop more into her artistry, there is no doubt that we will see different evolutions of Miley Cyrus. She might double back to her era of Rap and Mike Will Made It Productions, or she might strive for a more Country-Esque sound. Even So, Pop-Rock Miley is an evident stamp in her unconventional, yet familiar Musicality
