HBO Max adapts Horror Novel ‘Lovecraft Country’ into an Original Series.

LoveCraft Country is the latest Novel to Streaming adaptations, and it has the people hooked. The HBO Max series, reimagines Black fantasy by providing epic visuals suited with keen acting. The cast includes; Jonathan Majors, Jurnee Smollett, Michael K. Williams, Courtney B. Vance- the list is fucking extensive and amazing.

The 10 episode series aired August 16th on HOBMax. Showrunner credit goes to the lovely Misha Green; who based the show off the novel of the same name, but added her own supernatural twist.

Atticus Black (Majors), familiarly known as “Tic” , journey’s through the historically racist Jim Crow america, after figuring out that his father had been missing for some time(Williams). Letitia “Leti’ (Smollett) and George (Vance) join Tic on this voyage and together they experience a grip of shit.

LoveCraft is not the average adventurous- mythical show. Aside from fighting grueling monsters, mythical creatures and racist whites; it incorporates a piece of Black History/ Black experience, and meticulously combines it with the Sci-fi horror feel . Tic and them experienced a number of relatisic obstacles, that might seem unimaginable to some- but are a testament to the harsh realities of people who are able to vividly recall these moments.

The series jump right into the antics, as Tic and his crew encounter their first tribulation -A Sun Down Town. They experienced ,what some might consider more frightening than creatures who savagely feast on human blood, and that is a white man with a state sanctioned badge.

With the help of the Black travel guide (inspired by the The Motorist Green Book x Victor Hugo), they were able to anticipate some points in the expedition, but are still met with uncanny situations.

What is fulfilling about the series is that it accounts for some of the blanks left out in US History lessons. Sundown Towns, how the white house is white, the Negro Leagues and the Trumbull Race Riots, are all crucial to understanding Black people and by extension, the series.

Aside from the many horrors of Jim Crow, mythical creatures are added to the mix- and they were fucking up Tic and his people. There are monsters , spirits, Children of Eden and more, that at times it does get a bit confusing.

For the most part, it is a good show. It is important to not expect definitive answers, because it is, a [Scientific] Horror Fiction series. Going beyond the surface level of Black history is however one of its many enticing facets and drives the overall theme of the show. Bonding together both the fiction and nonfiction elements, are why LoveCraft Country has the people talking.
